Chapter 12

“I’m sorry I’m late,” I called out to J.T. as I struggled to get four puppies on leashes through the office door.

“Oh!” Molly jumped up, rushing over to untangle the leashes and help get them inside. “Are these yours? They’re adorable.”

J.T. was scowling at the puppies. I bit back a smile, knowing that he’d spent a few hours yesterday dealing with the five Daisy was taking care of. Molly might think the little furballs were adorable, but J.T. clearly had a different opinion.

“We’re trying to find the puppies good homes,” I told him. “Including the ones Daisy has.”

His expression brightened at that, and I realized that my boss might be far more supportive of this task than I’d thought.

“The sooner we get applications to these people and check their references and eligibility, the sooner these pups can go to their new homes,” I told him.

“Can that be by five o’clock tomorrow?” J.T. scrubbed a hand over his face. “I made Valentine’s Day dinner reservations at that new French place in Stallworth two months ago, and Daisy’s warning me that I’m either going to have to cancel the reservations or figure out how to convince a swanky restaurant to allow five puppies as well as Lady into the dining area.”

“You know there are companies where you can hire someone to dog-sit.” Molly picked up Starsky and snuggled him against her chest. “A smart boyfriend would make one phone call, shell out some cash, and have a trustworthy person watch the dogs while he and Daisy are out having a carefree evening.”

“There are companies that do that?” I asked as J.T. immediately got out his phone and began typing. Babysitting had been my main gig as a teenager. I could absolutely see enterprising teens being paid to watch pets while their owners went out, but a company? A company that specialized in dog-sitting?

“Yes, there are companies that do that.” She grinned. “They’ve got pet sitters and even pet walkers that come by your house while you’re at work and take Fido for an exercise stroll. Some of them even have doggie day-care places where people drop their pets off so they don’t have to spend the day in a cage while their owners are at work.”

“Holy cow. Look at these rates,” J.T. grumbled. “What a racket. How can they charge that just to sit in a house for an evening and make sure none of the dogs die or eat the curtains? Good grief. There’s an added fee for multiple dogs and an added fee for dogs under six months. This is going to cost more than the dinner.”

“Romance isn’t for the faint of heart or the light of wallet,” I teased. “Maybe you know a reputable young woman who likes puppies and might be interested in making a little extra money?” I nodded at Molly. “Someone, perhaps, sitting right here in this office?”

“I’ll pay you five bucks an hour to pet sit,” J.T. hurriedly offered her, as if he feared I might beat him to the punch.
